The Power of Stillness

ree

Undoubtedly, breaking free from the daily distractions is challenging. As I woke up at 4:30am this morning to get a head start on my day, I couldn't ignore the power of the early morning. At 4:30 am, the world remains dark and remarkably silent. This tranquility encourages me to take a moment, acting as a sacred defiance against the constant clamor of modern life. I set my phone on the charger and venture out with my walking companion, Oliver the dog. It's just us, the sound of the waves crashing on the beach, and a serene calmness. In a world brimming with digital distractions and endless tasks, I find myself wondering if I can truly find a moment of quiet. The answer is yes, you can, and it lies in our sense of smell, a primal pathway to memory and emotion that can lead us back to a state of calm awareness.

The mind's noisy snow globe

Imagine your mind as a snow globe. All day, new tasks and stimuli—emails, notifications, conversations—give it a vigorous shake. The glitter and flakes of worry and stress swirl around, making it impossible to see clearly. Stillness is the practice of setting the globe down and letting the commotion settle. It is in these quiet moments that our inner landscape comes into focus, offering clarity and peace.

Research shows that cultivating these moments of inner calm has powerful mental and emotional benefits, such as reducing stress and anxiety and fostering a deeper connection to yourself. Yet, the brain's "always-on" state can make it feel almost impossible to simply just BE.

The shortcut to stillness: Scent

This is where the power of scent comes in. Unlike our other senses, smell bypasses the brain's analytical filters, traveling a direct path to the limbic system, the hub for memory and emotion. This unique wiring means that a single, familiar aroma can instantly shift your mood or mental state without conscious effort.

In essence, scent can serve as a powerful anchor for presence, a gentle cue that signals to your mind and body that it's time to settle.

How scent helps you anchor into the moment:

  • A potent sensory cue: You can train your mind to associate a specific scent with your quiet rituals, whether it's meditation, journaling, or simply taking a moment to breathe. Over time, this scent will become a reliable marker, helping you transition from a busy state to a mindful one with just a single inhalation.

Every evening, I have a ritual of lighting a lavender or garden mint candle. The soothing scent helps me relax and transition into a calming yoga session or journaling. Both activities are excellent ways to unwind from the day and concentrate on a single task.

  • Enhancing mindful breathing: Pairing a fragrance with your breathwork can deepen your practice. By focusing on the aroma entering and leaving your nostrils, you are more easily anchored in the present, making it simpler to quiet the mind's chatter.

  • Creating a tranquil environment: The right aromas can transform a space into a sanctuary. Grounding scents like cedarwood and sandalwood can help create an atmosphere of tranquility, making it easier to relax. Uplifting citrus scents can clear mental clutter and promote focus, while calming scents like lavender can signal to your nervous system that it's time to unwind.

Your scented ritual for presence

Integrating scent into your daily routines is a simple yet profound way to reclaim stillness. Here are a few ways to start:

  • Morning clarity: Start your day with a bright, energizing scent like peppermint or lemon during your morning routine to enhance focus and set a clear intention.

  • Midday reset: When you feel overwhelmed, take a "sacred pause". Inhale a revitalizing scent from an essential oil roller or a small scented item to quickly recenter yourself and clear your mind.

  • Evening wind-down: Signal to your body that it's time to rest by using a calming scent like lavender or frankincense in a diffuser or as a pillow spray. This creates a peaceful atmosphere for a good night's sleep.

In the search for stillness, we often overlook the simplest of tools. By consciously engaging our sense of smell, we can create a powerful and personal ritual that invites us back to the present moment, allowing the snow globe of our mind to finally settle.
