In a world that often feels overwhelmed by negativity, it’s crucial to take a moment to pause, reflect, and remember what it means to be kind. Over the past few years, particularly since the COVID-19, many of us have noticed a shift in how people interact. Social media, while a powerful tool for connection, has also become a breeding ground for harsh words and divisiveness. It’s disheartening to see how quickly kindness can be overshadowed by negativity.
Reflecting on Kindness
I think back to the aftermath of 9/11, a time when humanity seemed to unite in compassion and understanding. Strangers helped one another, and kindness was abundant. What has happened since then? It feels as though basic manners and gestures of goodwill have become rare. Just the other day, I found myself struggling with a heavy 45-pound box of wax, and not one of the three people who walked by offered to help. It struck me how different that scenario might have played out a few years ago.
We’re all human, navigating this life together, and it’s essential to recognize the impact of our actions. A simple compliment, a door held open, or even a heartfelt “thank you” can brighten someone’s day. It’s these small acts of kindness that create ripples of positivity in our communities.
Why Is Everyone So Mean Lately?
Even in a beautiful beach town, surrounded by stunning views, vibrant restaurants, and the calming presence of the Atlantic Ocean, I can't help but notice a troubling trend. Despite the scenic beauty that should inspire joy and community, there seems to be an undercurrent of hostility and rudeness.
- Stress and Uncertainty: The past few years have been filled with challenges that have left many feeling anxious and overwhelmed. This stress can manifest as irritability or unkindness, affecting how we interact with one another.
- Social Media Influence: The anonymity of online interactions can sometimes embolden people to express negativity they wouldn’t dare share face-to-face. This can create a culture where meanness seems more acceptable.
- Lack of Awareness: Sometimes, people simply aren’t aware of how their words and actions affect those around them. It’s easy to get caught up in our own lives, forgetting that a small act of kindness can make a significant impact. Here's what we are doing today!

Why Kindness Matters
In a world filled with challenges, choosing kindness can be a powerful antidote. It fosters goodwill, strengthens relationships, and creates a sense of community. It’s a reminder that despite our differences, we all share the same humanity.
This morning, I woke up with one side of my face swollen—just great. Why did this happen? I have no clue, but visiting Urgent Care is definitely on my to-do list today. This situation made me realize the importance of being kinder, as I literally look deformed. I had to pause, take a deep breath, and promise myself to be a bit more gentle and kind, as I was beginning to spiral into the "why me" mindset, wishing the world would treat me more kindly. I'm really tired. My goal for today is to foster an environment where compassion flourishes and negativity is set aside, especially towards ourselves. Let's not be so harsh.
I hope you’ll join us on this special day, not just for a discount but to celebrate the power of kindness. Together, let’s make the world a little brighter, one act of kindness at a time.
Love always,
Caroline, Oliver, Willow (and her babies) and the entire staff at Blue Eden & Oliver and Twist
