Those Summer Blues

Back by popular demand, it fall y'all - yay.
Back by popular demand, it fall y'all - yay.

There’s always a day in August when the air feels different, the sunlight softens, and a wave of nostalgia sweeps in. For many, this shift stirs a bittersweet feeling—a homesickness not for a place, but for a time. The youthful days spent on the beach, carefree and endless, seem to slip further away with each passing year. However, and there is always a however, there are methods to overcome that feeling. For me, it's about preparing and gearing up for the last quarter of the year. While most retailers in a seasonal resort town significantly slow down, this is the time when we increase online sales and participate in fall and holiday events. Is it easy on my soul? No, to be brutally honest, I am exhausted. Exhausted is probably an understatement. It's that constant fight-or-flight survival mode that I feel I'm always in. But there isn't a choice when adult responsibilities loom...

Why August Feels Different

August marks a subtle turning point in the year. The days are still warm, but the intensity of summer begins to fade. For many, this month signals the end of long vacations, the return to routines, and the approach of cooler seasons. This natural transition can trigger feelings of loss or longing, especially for moments that felt simpler or more joyful.

The homesickness felt in August often isn’t about missing a physical home but a longing for the freedom and innocence of youth. Those endless beach days, the salty air, the sound of waves, and the feeling of sand between toes represent more than just summer fun—they symbolize a time when worries were few and life felt full of possibility.

The Power of Nostalgia

Nostalgia has a powerful effect on our emotions. It can bring comfort and warmth, reminding us of meaningful experiences and connections. At the same time, it can deepen feelings of sadness or homesickness when we realize those moments are behind us.

Understanding nostalgia as a natural response helps us manage it better. Instead of resisting these feelings, we can use them as a bridge to reconnect with ourselves and our past in a healthy way.

Embracing Change Instead of Resisting It

Change is a constant part of life, and August’s shift in atmosphere is a reminder of that. Rather than fighting the feeling of those summer blues, embracing change can lead to growth and new opportunities.

Here are some ways to embrace change and ease the ache for youthful beach days:

  • Reflect on what those days meant to you. Was it freedom, connection with friends, or a sense of peace? Identifying these feelings can help you find new ways to experience them now.

  • Create new traditions. If you can’t spend as much time at the beach, find other places or activities that bring similar joy and relaxation.

  • Stay present. Practice mindfulness to appreciate the current moment instead of longing for the past.

  • Connect with others. Share your memories and feelings with friends or family. Sometimes talking about nostalgia can make it less heavy.

Finding Joy in New Beach Experiences

Even if your youthful beach days are rare now, it’s possible to create meaningful experiences at the shore at any age. Here are some ideas to reconnect with the beach in a way that fits your current life:

  • Plan a quiet morning walk. Early mornings often bring calm and solitude, allowing you to enjoy the beach’s beauty without crowds.

  • Try a new beach activity. Paddleboarding, beach yoga, or photography can add fresh excitement to your visits.

  • Bring a piece of your youth. Pack a favorite childhood snack, a book you loved, or music that reminds you of those days.

  • Invite friends or family. Sharing the beach with loved ones can create new memories that blend past and present.

How I Use Nostalgia to Inspire My Creativity

Nostalgia can also be a powerful source of creativity. Many people find that reflecting on past experiences fuels their artistic or writing projects. If you feel inspired by your youthful beach memories, consider:

  • Writing a journal entry or poem about those days.

  • Creating a photo album or scrapbook with old pictures and mementos.

  • Painting or drawing scenes that capture your feelings.

  • Composing music or playlists that evoke the mood of summer.

  • Plant flowers - gardening helps my soul to calm down. Cutting flowers and creating beautiful floral arrangements through out my home and in the stores just makes me smile - you'll smile too with fresh flowers in every room.

These activities not only honor your past but also help you process emotions and express yourself.

Creating a Personal August Ritual

To transform the bittersweet feelings of August into something positive, consider creating a personal ritual that honors your memories and welcomes change. This could be:

  • Lighting a candle and reflecting on your favorite beach memories.

  • Writing a letter to your younger self, expressing gratitude and encouragement.

  • Taking a photo of the beach or nature each August to document the changing seasons.

  • Preparing a meal or drink that reminds you of summer days.

Rituals provide a sense of control and comfort, helping you navigate transitions with intention.

August’s shift in the air brings more than just a change in weather. It invites us to pause, reflect, and reconnect with parts of ourselves that may feel distant. By understanding the roots of our homesickness for youthful beach days, embracing change, and finding new ways to celebrate those memories, we can turn nostalgia into a source of strength and joy. Whether through quiet walks, creative expression, or meaningful rituals, August can become a month of gentle renewal rather than loss. Take a moment this August to honor your past and welcome the possibilities of today.
